Energy Efficiency
This is an area we take very seriously and so we should. Log homes can be ‘snug as a bug in a rug’ or as cold and drafty as a ‘boarded barn’.

Many problems derive from:

Natural twisting and the drying of the logs.
       Bad building practices.
Old technology (materials and methods used in the past are inferior to today’s standards)
Poor or “no” insulating of the corner notches and lateral log joints.
       Improper window and door Installation.
Bad seal on base, plate log, ridge-pole and purlins.

Northwood has restored homes in some of the harshest regions in Canada’s north. We know what it takes to seal a log home from extreme elements. This knowledge can help you, whatever climate your home is in. Properly sealing your home from the elements can increase energy savings on average from 25 percent to as high as 75 percent. In most cases energy savings can offset the cost of the work in a very short time.

Some things that can be done:

Professionally sealing laterals and notches with chinking Also See:  Chinking Application
Installation of ridged and expandable foams in window and door headers.
Application of expandable foam into corner notches.
Laterals drilled and then injected with expandable foam.
Sealing of base and top plate logs.
        Sealing of ridge-pole and purlins.
Removal of exterior trim and application of expandable foams.

Northwood was one of the first companies to use modern latex-based chinking in western Canada. Northwood has always been a leader in the implementation of new energy saving products and we continue to developed new application methods for chinking, ridged and expandable foams, Sheep’s wool and composite materials for  window and door installation.
